I became a big fan of 4x4's over Christmas and New Year though. Lost count of the number of times ours helped us and many others to get home, get to work, get to the shops, recover their stuck car, deliver food/medcine etc etc. For sure you don't need 'em everyday - but on the days you do they are very valuable. As Clarkson says - he has a Rolex watch that is waterproof to 500 metres. He ain't planning on testing that feature - but likes the idea that he could if he had to
