Default Armitt Library saved??

"Armitt Saved" shouted the headline in this week's Westmorland Gazette, which was trying to claim credit for bringing in a £10,000 donation. The fact that the Armitt needs £20,000 to stave off closure didn't seem to matter, so anxious was the paper to congratulate itself.

The Armitt trustees must be in a bind - they need the Gazette to promote the appeal but they must be mad about the misleading headline story which gives the impression that people needn't worry any more about the Library's future (if indeed they were worried before). The old adage applies - use a newspaper and it will probably abuse you.

Back in the late 1970's when the Armitt Library collection was controversially to be moved from Ambleside's Public Library, local people raised a successful petition to protest at plans to disperse the collection to other museums. If the current appeal to save it fails and new homes outside Ambleside are sought, what will be the local reaction thirty years on?
