LISTING IS BY DISTRICT: Ambleside is a small town of around 2000 people and is the centre of the area covered by this web site. Waterhead is a small developed area on the north shore of Lake Windermere, a mile south of the town. Grasmere is a sizeable village with shops, pubs and restaurants, about 4 miles to the north, via Rydal which is a small hamlet. To the west of Ambleside, from 3 to 6 miles, lie Skelwith, Elterwater, Great & Little Langdale, small hamlets in beautiful relatively isolated quiet valleys, dependent upon Ambleside for most town-based amenities. To the south, from 4 to 8 miles, are Hawkshead, Wray, Near & Far Sawrey, Grizedale. These are picturesque hamlets and villages, Hawkshead at the centre having small shops, pubs and restaurants. RATINGS: These are English Tourism Council star ratings (maximum 5). These star ratings are based on the available facilities at an establishment, not on quality of service. Accolades for quality of service are made by Gold or Silver Awards. The absence of a rating or accolade should not be taken as an indicator of quality, bad or good. It may mean merely that a rating is currently unknown or that the establishment has not applied for an assessment, or that an assessment is pending, or has simply not registered with the Tourist Board. In the UK, registration is not compulsory.
